Printing Terms
Bleed:
This means that the artwork needs to be extended beyond the trimmed edge of the book. And we usually require a minimum of 3mm or 1/8” extension. In other words, if the book is 8-1/2” x 11” in size, then the artwork should be extended to 8-3/4” x 11-1/4” in area. The purpose of this extension is to make sure that when the book is trimmed to its final size, the artwork / color will come to the edge of the page and no white areas are showing.
CMYK:
It means Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black, this is the color formulation required for offset printing.
RGB:
This means Red, Green and Blue. This is the color formulation for viewing on computer screen.
DPI:
This means dots per inch and is the description of the level of resolution of the images. We usually require the images to be of 300 DPI
Crop Marks:
This is the small marks (usually a small horizontal line and a small vertical line) placed on the edges of each page indicating the position of where the paper will be trimmed after printing to produce the final correct size of the book.
